I finished Peter May's The Criticthe second book about a Scottish forensic scientist Enzo McLeod living in France. In this outing he is in the Gaillac wine area, and there is a lot about winemaking. I was a litle disappointed in the denouement,as the murderer hadnt been in the story since about page 50,and the motivation was somewhat incredible, the murderer was just insane really.

Peter May has written an excellent novel with "The Critic." He manages to successfully incorporate mystery, suspense, humor and a little romance into one great plot. He describes the wine-making process in great detail, as part of understanding the aspects of the mystery. When the world’s number-one wine critic is murdered during a tasting tour in France, Enzo Macleod, Scots exile and former forensics expert, finds that the genteel world of winemakers hides plenty of greed, envy, and desperation. Peter May is full of cheap emotional tricks This is my 5th Peter May novel, and I just can’t do it anymore.

They are well written, like all Peter May's novels. They're interesting and informative. In The Critic we learn about wine and the importance of the reviews. There is always a real sense of place, so much so that I invariably look up the area of France where it's set.
